The Scattered Chairs (A Palimpsest)

Photographs by Danny Reiser/WashU

In the fall of 2024, I received permission from the Kurt Jooss Estate to choreograph a dance based on Jooss’ 1932 masterpiece, The Green Chairs: A Dance of Death in Eight Scenes. The score consisted of excerpts from the original piano score by Frederic (Fritz) Cohen, along with sounds of the Joffrey Ballet dancers performing the piece. Sixteen Washington University students— fifteen undergraduates and one graduate student— participated in the process and performed the piece as a part of Washington University Dance Theatre from December 6-8, 2024. The piece is a satiric, biting critique of warmongering and its tragic consequences; my reworking also raises the question of how history rhymes. As part of the process, I facilitated an educational event, “Making Art in a Time of War: Kurt Jooss’ The Green Table (1932) in Weimar Germany and Today.”
